Explore the research partnership between the Schools of Social Work/Social Policy and Psychology, Trinity College Dublin and the Daughters of Charity Child and Family Services

The first in the series features a partnership between the Schools of Social Work/Social Policy and Psychology and the Daughters of Charity Child and Family Services.

Do families benefit from therapeutic services delivered in family centres and early education centres? Using a suite of standardised measures, we have sought to establish what benefits to families may accrue. The results are intended to inform the further development of services so as to better meet the needs of families and are revealed in our recent publication: Why Measures Matter: Charting change in the lives of children and families.

Professor Trevor Spratt (Co-Director of Trinity Research in Childhood Centre) and Dr Mary Hudson (Director of Services, Daughters of Charity Child and Family Services) reflect on both the results of their endeavours to answer the research questions and the value of relationship building in making such successful joint enterprises possible.

Professor Trevor Spratt

AIB Professor, Childhood Research and Co-Director of TRiCC

Trevor Spratt is a former social worker who is now engaged in research into what circumstances create developmental challenges for children and how we can, through research, inform effective ameliorative or buffering interventions. The research reported in this seminar emphasises the need for close relationships and shared perspectives in developing partnerships between researchers and service providers.

Dr Mary Hudson

Director of Services, Daughters of Charity Child and Family Services

Mary Hudson trained as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and has worked in frontline practice and in leadership positions in therapeutic services for children, young people and families for most of her career.  She is engaged in understanding how services can identify and respond appropriately and effectively for children and families most in need, within a society that is constantly changing. The seminar will explore the journey of the Daughters of Charity Child and Family Services in exploring these issues and how the partnership with TRiCC has assisted in developing a strategic roadmap for the organisation in addressing these challenging questions.
